FREEDIVING IN THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FREEDIVING

Freediving is being underwater on breath hold. It is an ancient practice that has become a popular sport and recreational activity. It can be performed in a pool or open water. In the pool the main disciplines are static (simply holding the breath with no movement) and dynamic (swimming underwater horizontally). In open water disciplines, a freedive buoy and weighted line are used to achieve diving down to depth. The diver pictured to the left is descending by finning down whilst using the line as a guide, a discipline known as constant weight bi-fins. It is critical for safety that one never performs a breath hold in water alone and should only do so with a trained buddy.

WHY FREEDIVE?

Freediving is more than just a hobby or sport—it's a skill that opens up a world beneath the surface, offering unparalleled peace, serenity, and connection to nature. Here’s why you should consider taking the plunge and exploring the underwater world through freediving:

With over 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water, freediving gives you the opportunity to see the world from a completely new perspective, where better to start than with the dynamic and dramatic underwater landscapes of Scotland.

Learning to freedive involves gaining a deep understanding of your body's physiology and anatomy, particularly the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. This knowledge can empower you to increase your general resilience in life. Understanding how your body responds to the challenges of freediving not only enhances your performance but also promotes a healthier lifestyle and a greater appreciation for your physical and mental well-being.

Through the practice of cultivating relaxation and being present in the moment, which is key to freediving, it is possible to experience periods of true state of being. Being underwater strips away the societal expectations that are placed on us on land leaving you to just be, you.

The education provided through a freediving course equips you with the knowledge and skills required to stay safe and feel more comfortable and confident in the water.
